5-ALA is a technology that utilizes photo sensitivity in order to identify and remove a specific brain tumor called glioblastoma. 5-ALA is a chemical that the patient drinks that makes them photosensitive for 24 hours and allows for the surgeon to differentiate the brain tumor from brain. Dr. Philippe Mercier is a SLUCare Neurosurgeon at SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital who specializes in these complex brain surgeries and is an expert in his field.
