The vortex teardown
Hristo Velev’s Thinking Particles webinar for Cebas and moshi52.com
● Outline
○ The vortex in ‘Impossible’
○ Elements
■ Sucking in environment objects
■ Lightning strikes from the core
■ Disintegration of lightning struck and environment objects
Hristo will guide you through building the vortex Bottleship created for ‘The Impossible’ using
Thinking Particles. It’s a dizzying, dynamic and exciting effect that is often used in movies for its
mesmerizing shapes and interesting opportunities. We’ll start with understanding of its inner
workings, then build the fundamental swirling debris and enrich it by adding lightning strikes,
disintegration, sucking environment objects in - plenty of action! Finally, some insight on the
lifespan of an effect in a real production - conceptualizing it with the director and taking it
through all the steps to a finished spectacle.
● Vortex physics made easy
○ Balance centrifugal and attractive force
○ Variations with altitude
● Basic debris vortex setup
○ Emitters
○ Forces
○ Shapes
○ Layers
● Sucking in environmental objects
● Lightning setup
○ Particle line between the start/end emitters
○ Texture based displacement
○ Shapes and rendering
● Disintegration of lightning struck pieces
● Disintegration of environmental objects
● Using TP to drive other software like FumeFX, Stoke and Krakatoa
● Building up the scene from a palette of setups
● Effect variation for multiple shots
● Effect lifespan
○ Conceptualizing with the director - simple drawings, concept art, discussions
○ Building up the effect over multiple iterations
○ Dealing with changes and budgeting resources
● Finale

Cebas would like to say a BIG Thank You to Hristo Velev for this awesome Webinar, and to Hu Lizhi of 52moshi.com for making this available to students in China. Hristo is a passionate people helper and so is Lizhi, and that is why, via Cebas efforts this webinar was possible.

We like to Thank all the attendees, the time zones across Bulgaria-China-BC Canada was not always easy to manage but we did it.
