East Midlands Airport Circular Hike
Welcome, fellow Llama Paws explorers, to another exhilarating walking adventure from sleepy Shepshed town, around the nearby airport and back again across the fields.
Starting from the Glenmore Park car park, our adventure begins as we venture up the peaceful Sunday town streets, soaking in the quaint charm of this historic Leicestershire town. As we make our way northwest along Belton Street, the allure of the countryside beckons. This soon pulls us along roads and then it’s time to traverse through springtime fields and meadows, before we follow a scenic route alongside a tranquil river, immersing ourselves in the beauty of nature.
Next our path takes us across the bustling A42 road, leading us into the quaint and picturesque village of Diseworth, and then up some quiet – and not so quiet – roads to skirt around the southern edge of East Midlands Airport. We take a brief sojourn along the airport-trail, before concluding the circular route is best served by diverting through the heart of nearby Castle Donnington. Here we're treated to a delightful diversion, witnessing its varied and intriguing housing stock along the way.
Before long, our journey continues eastward away from the town and through the recently landscaped…er…landscape which surrounds the bustling East Midlands Gateway industrial zone. If you love a gigantic warehouse astride a perfectly straight road – this is one for you! After escaping ‘the zone’ we cross over the mighty M1 motorway, and then divert down a quieter backroad to enter the idyllic village of Long Watton, surrounded by verdant landscapes and serene beauty.
But the adventure doesn't end there! We embark on a challenging field route southward, passing alongside the enchanting Oakley and Piper woods, before emerging on the outskirts of Shepshed. With the end of our journey in sight, we make our triumphant return to the vibrant town, completing our exhilarating excursion through the heart of the countryside.
