Para Bellum Games continues to put out visually interesting units for their Conquest game. The bulk of those designs continue to belong to the Spires, and the Avatara are certainly going to continue their reign of decidedly unique units.
Much like their name implies, the Avatara are synthetic bodies that the bigwigs of the Spires can stick their consciousness into and control remotely, much like an avatar in a video game.
They're built to be unique, flashy, androgynous constructs of the battlefield. I'd say the model makers succeeded in that regard.
Of interest to me is the Avatara have the mainstay rule, which lets you field nothing but these creatures in lieu of hordes of drones and clones. Being an Ogre Kingdoms fan from WFB, I've always liked the idea of a smaller elite army that hits just as hard (if not harder) than the hordes of rabble. Plus if you're stuck in the ways of GW games they'd make great Daemon princes or just about any kind of Slaanesh unit...
So how does the kit go together? Surprisingly pretty easy. I was concerned that the legs need to match, but playing around with the parts, that doesn't seem to be the case. The arms are conveniently tagged with a letter to help avoid confusion, as are the shoulder armor pieces.
There's a few arm pose variations which is appreciated given the fact you may want to field an army of these. I do wish there were more heads available though. Considering how many parts some of the Dweghom kits get (never mind some of those are dual kits on top of that), or the variety of Nord parts on kits like the raiders, I feel the Avatara got a bit short- changed in this regard.
My personal hope is we see future Avatara varieties in the future. I love their strange elegance and sinewy Keita Amemiya/ Takeyuki Takeya style tokusatsu monster design. In a perfect world, much like the Ogre Kingdoms of old, the kits would be cross compatible and we'd have all sorts of bizarre amalgamations running rampant on the battlefield. You know you want it too!
