Spreading depolarizations are critical in infarct growth during acute stroke. Using multimodal optical imaging, von Bornstädt et al. show that hypoxic and hypotensive transients and light tactile stimulation are all capable of triggering depolarization waves in mice and discuss the implications of this discovery.
