China's first dual-use semi-submersible ship passed acceptance check and was put into use in Qidong City, east China's Jiangsu Province on Tuesday.
The vessel is 227 meters long with a lifting force of 50 000 tonnes and its main deck covering 7,700 square meters.
Used as a cargo ship, it draws 27 meters of water when semi-submersed and can sail in a navigational speed of 14 knots.
With an endurance of 18,000 nautical miles, the ship can navigate and conduct operations in high seas.
"It took two years and three months from its design, construction to its launch. It is so far China's largest civilian craft that can meet national defense requirements. With this vessel, we can conduct operations at sea including loading, shipping, unloading and repair. These are typical military functions," said Huang Hao, a military officer from Wuxi joint logistics support center.
It is reported that at present, only few countries, including China and the Netherlands, have such vessels.
With advanced technologies and high-level automation, the vessel can be used to provide services such as reshipment, logistics supplement for helicopters, ships emergency repair at sea and evacuation.
