Why Facebook Went Down
Is Facebook down? Facebook and all of their applications have went down on 10/4/2021. This outage is a global issue that is impacting the entire Internet. Facebook DNS records have been deleted and no DNS servers can figure out what IP address to send requests to. This comes a day after the Facebook whistle blower was on 60 minutes, the entire Facebook DNS infrastructure went down. Initial investigations shows every DNS record associated with Facebook has been deleted. DNS issues can take up to over 48hrs to propagate changes through out the entire Internet. That means the issues could very well have started early this morning or even late last night. From the time Facebook replaces the DNS records that went missing and click save / submit, the propagation timeline of 48hrs or more starts. If Facebook DNS records were not backed up then these DNS records would have to be created manually. This compounds the outage for Facebook to potentially continue on for days for some folks.
