Game: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Platform: NES
Completed: October 24, 2022
Rules: Beat the game with only Michaelangelo. No subweapons are allowed, including that invincibility item. If you accidentally pick one up, you have to restart.
I had such a great time playing through this game for the first time that I decided to give myself a challenge. I wanted to play using only the "worst" turtle but I actually wasn't sure if that would be Mike or Raph. I think Mike has better range but Raph deals more damage. I went with Mike since doing less damage often means being put in some very tricky situations because you have to hit many enemies more than once that would normally die in one hit to Raph. At least I think that's right. To make things more interesting, no subweapons are allowed at all. This includes the invincibility item that makes your turtle spin around. In fact, don't even pick anything up. Subweapons are lava. If you pick one up at all then the challenge is failed. Because using a continue revives the other turtles, don't do that either. I'm also going to upload a version of this with some commentary that may be helpful (or at least entertaining) to people who might want to try this themselves. This recording was only of the successful attempt, not the hours of practice beforehand.
Here are some highlights:
Right at the beginning, steamroll the other three turtles so that they cannot be used. This also makes for a good effect during the blimp scene since only one turtle will get into the blimp instead of multiple.
1 minute, 50 seconds - If you stand at the left side of the screen when it is able to scroll again, you can walk through this enemy. This changes nothing.
2 minutes, 10 seconds - If you can keep all of these flying enemies on the screen then none of the other enemies will spawn.
4 minutes, 15 seconds - If you jump above these foes then they will crouch back down, making life easier for you. Right after that, I got distracted by this one red pixel that is near the ladder near the top of the screen. Do you see it? Why is it there? What an amazing pixel.
7 minutes - If you hold right while disarming this bomb, you will swim safely away from the coral. And that screen with all the coral right after...those hitboxes are absolute garbage but this is a method that seems fairly consistent for me. I haven't found a way to take less damage consistently. I lost a lot of runs here.
9 minutes - Somehow the TV gets repaired and set upright during this scene. Then Shredder's hand pops out of the TV! What a swell guy.
9 minutes, 50 seconds - The buildings here can randomly contain different enemy types. I prefer the Fire Freaks (that's their name according to the manual). If you want to change the enemies you can try leaving and re-entering the area.
10 minutes, 35 seconds - Here's a useful trick to glitch this Fire Freak through the floor.
13 minutes, 25 seconds - This steamroller always seems to park here for some reason. Right after is an example of me changing the enemy set in the next building to the Fire Freaks. In this building the Fire Freaks at the bottom spawn so many little dudes that the ones up top cannot. This is quite beneficial. Just be careful that you don't accidentally pick up any dropped subweapons from the little guys.
16 minutes, 45 seconds - This game has an odd way of displaying your health. I think certain things can do less than a half of a square of damage but is not reflected visually. It's possible to get hit and it appears that your health didn't diminish at all.
21 minutes, 5 seconds - If you stay close to the boomerang guys then they will just hop in place like a bunch of goofs.
25 minutes, 30 seconds - For whatever reason there's a full pizza here that is invisible until you jump close to it.
26 minutes, 40 seconds - Why did those enemies just appear?
37 minutes, 10 seconds - Another example of getting hit but not showing it. I decided to still get a pizza to be safe.
44 minutes, 20 seconds - Once I figured out a strategy this turned into a fun battle.
49 minutes, 10 seconds - That guy just fell through the floor!
51 minutes, 30 seconds - This gold hallway is absurd and success is based on scrolling the screen and spawning the enemies in the right spots. I planned these moves very carefully. Watch the "guide" version of this video for commentary. Fortunately when Mike gets to half health his attack raises and he can kill the copters in one hit.
55 minutes, 40 seconds - Oddly, your bandana turns red in this battle. Also, stand in this exact spot and you're always safe!
Final thoughts:
This challenge was really tough but was a lot of fun. Playing the game through like this really teaches you a lot about the game. Perhaps I'll give a Raph only run a try at some point since some may argue that he's actually the "worst" turtle.
