Game Review & Impressions
---------------------------------------------------
Anyone with even a passing interest in the modern Commodore 64 scene should be familiar with Sam's Journey. The game was released back in 2017 and gained a huge amount of attention from the retro scene, with good reason. It remains a landmark title for the Commodore 64, albeit one which I will confess has taken until now to get around to actually playing.
In terms of design, Sam's Journey is a classic platform game. The game's blueprint is very much based on the classic 8-bit and 16-bit Super Mario Bros. games of yore, and there are elements from Kid Chameleon, Alex Kidd and a whole host of other classic platformers. The objective of each stage is to simply find the level exit and progress to the next, although completionists -- and this is where the game's real longevity resides -- will want to track down the collectibles secreted throughout. Collecting coloured sweaters will change Sam's form, bestowing him with different skills to help him tackle the challenges ahead, all of which will need to be mastered if you hope to complete the game.
When it comes to Sam's Journey, any discussion regarding the relative merits of the game will be rather one-sided. The whole package -- art, graphics, level design, technical implementation -- is just exemplary. The only issue I had whilst playing was training my brain to cope with using some of Sam's skills whilst jumping. The combination of up-to-jump and pressing fire to latch on to walls or fences occasionally resulted in me fumbling the controls and plummeting to my death, but this is more a limitation with the C64 and it's joystick system than any fault of the actual game. What impressed me the most is just the sheer amount of effort which must have gone into creating the game - everything is just exceptionally polished. Sam's Journey is the culmination of almost 40 years of technical innovation and game design using a computer with a paltry 64 KB of memory and a 1 MHz processor; it's a sensational C64 title, one which I'm not sure will ever be bettered.
