A mouse fibroblast cell line was incubated with propidium iodide (PI, red), infected with GFP-tagged HSV-1, and then monitored by time-lapse fluorescence microscopy. After HSV-1 infection, the GFP intensity increased before plasma membrane rupture, indicating that viral protein accumulation is involved in cell death.
