In this module, we look at the concept of negative and positive face, focusing especially on: (i) Erving Goffman's idea of 'face' as a mask we strive to maintain in social situations, (ii) politeness as a behaviour used to preserve one's own and others' faces, and (iii) the concept of positive and negative face.
