In this story, a proud hare once comes upon a tortoise moving along very slowly. It laughs at the tortoise and calls it a slow-coach. The tortoise challenges the hare to a race. They set off on the race. At first the hare runs very fast and reaches a long distance. It turns back and sees the tortoise still near the start point only and moving very slowly. The proud hare thinks that the tortoise would take a very long time to catch up with it and so it goes off to sleep under a tree. Meanwhile the tortoise though very slowly, yet steadily makes its way past the hare. As it reaches the finishing line, the hare wakes up with a start, but it is too late. The tortoise had won the race!
