a Pixar Mentor's Feedback vs a Cocky Valedictorian
Halfway through my first class at graduate school my mentor from Pixar had a simple assignment for us:
"This week, you'll be using a ball with a tail to create an
animation of a squirrel. You dont have to tell a story but aim to make the overlap, especially of the tail - as fluid as possible."
Immediately I was smug.
I knew I could make this impressive as hell.
Ball bounces were child’s play.
And I was a valedictorian of my university after all.
So deciding to go above and beyond my classmates was automatic.
Creating a story wasn't required but there was no way I was holding back.
This simple ball and tail would not only have amazing weight and overlap.
It would also be a full-on acting skit between a squirrel and acron that rivaled Scrat.
After a weeks’ worth of dazzling movements had been keyframed – I proudly submitted it for critique to my Pixar Mentor.
And that night I chuckled myself to sleep dreaming of all the praise I would soon hear.
But what actually happened though, was completely different than I expected.
No the feedback wasn't stellar. And I didn't like hearing it at the time.
But it was exactly what I needed to hear to truly be ready for an animation job a year later.
