As we all know that Linux is a multi-user system and that is why it is very important to manage files and directories with a correct permission. We do not want anyone accessing other user's file and data without their permission. And since everything is treated as a file in Linux, we can restrict the access of hardware and resources using file permission.
Linux uses "chmod" command to manage the file permission and it does so by using an alphabetical method and a numeric method. Both methods are very easy to understand and implement. However, experienced user may find numerical method a bit more easy and quick to implement. In alphabetical method, read permission is represented by letter "r", write permission is represented by letter "w" and execute permission is represented by letter "x". Whereas, in numeric method, read permission is calculated by using number "4", write is number "2" and execute is number "1".
