The breath of life. "Steel" concrete - a myth or a reality?
In the modern world, and even more so in almost every metropolitan area, concrete surrounds us everywhere. Entire houses and quarters are built of concrete, but as you know, the factories that produce this building material cause huge damage to the environment. Moreover, ordinary concrete generally does not withstand strong earthquakes, which causes a large number of casualties in the disaster. Researchers from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver have found a way to help residents of seismically dangerous areas and territories, often suffering from hurricanes and tornadoes. They have developed a reliable and environmentally friendly concrete that makes the frame of the building as durable as if it were made of steel.
A new material called "Ecological malleable cement composite (EDCC)" is a mixture of cement, polymer fibers, fly ash and other industrial additives. The cement was designed at the molecular level to obtain a material similar in its properties to steel, which is not only very durable but also flexible. According to the engineers, in the event of an earthquake, the EDCC material will not crumble like ordinary concrete, but will bend and stretch like metal. The new cement composite has turned out to be environmentally friendly, since the composition for the most part consists of a by-product of industrial production, called fly ash, that is, dust formed when the fuel is burned from mineral impurities.
New eco-friendly concrete can be used not only for new construction, but also for strengthening old buildings - it can be sprayed and thereby strengthen, for example, the walls of houses. Such cement can be applied to the creation of boxes for explosive structures, as well as to pipelines and other systems.
The creators of the new material have already conducted the first tests on the building of an elementary school in Vancouver. On the inner walls of the building a new cement composite with a thickness of about 10 mm was sprayed. Then they simulated an earthquake with a magnitude of nine points. Strongest shocks did not affect the school. It turns out that a layer of only 10 mm is enough to strengthen the walls of buildings in seismic zones.
The developers pay attention also to the environmental friendliness of the production of new building material, since the replacement of cement in the mixture with 70% fly ash will reduce the amount of cement used. This is an especially important achievement today, as the production of one ton of cement throws out almost a ton of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
We invite scientists and all interested persons to discuss the possibilities of using environmentally friendly malleable cement composite (EDCC).
