New Skateboard: Birdhouse Skateboards Tony Hawk Full Skull Complete Skateboard
Hi! I am 52 years old and I am a beginner learning to skateboard. I got a new skateboard for my birthday. It is the Birdhouse Tony Hawk Full Skull Complete Skateboard. It has good quality components. It has an 8” 7 ply stained Canadian maple deck. The trucks are Birdhouse branded, powder coated black, and have the lazer logo of the company on it. The wheels are also Birdhouse branded 52mm 100a wheels for a performance ride. It has Apec 7 bearings. Lastly, the griptape is also Birdhouse branded and die-cut.
I have two other skateboards. The one I have been using most is a Braille Samurai Complete Skateboard. It also has premium components. The deck, trucks, wheels are all good quality and I have enjoyed skateboarding on this deck. Aaron Kyro the founder of Braille recently was elevated a the Church of Scientology in SF and I read online that it is causing some drama at the company with riders leaving and their skateboard warehouse closing. I don’t know too much about Scientology and I am unsure about the details, but I did want to mention this. If anyone knows what is going on, please comment.
The Birdhouse board was priced at $119.99 discounted to $89.99 and the Braille skateboard is priced at $154.99, discounted to $123.99. Check them both out online. As complete skateboards, they arrive fully assembled and ready to ride, though I had to add wax to the contact points and adjust the tightness of the trucks.
I don’t know enough about skateboarding to go into details about the conponents, but as a beginner, I believe, both these skateboards are high quality built better than the $30 Amazon skateboard I bought with my daughter to learn to skateboard. That board felt cheap and the components felt like they would not last long.
This new skateboard is great! I am a beginner. This footage is the first time I am riding it at the skatepark. The skateboard is brand new, so everything was so smooth. The wheels and bearings were so smooth and quiet. I adjusted the trucks fairly loose and had to tighten them a bit to avoid wheel bite. I had added some wax at the contact points of the trucks to keep it nice and quiet. Grip tape was brand new, so my VANS sneakers stuck to it like glue.
I am working on carving in the park and trying to get higher up the wall. I am around the middle portion of the wall at the apex of my carves. I do believe I was riding higher on the wall and it felt great to me. Part of that was driven by the new board, with all the new wheels and bearings, but also with the halo effect of Tony Hawk and the smoothness of the new board. But it could also be a placebo effect of having a new board. I’ll have to do a comparison video some time.
I often go to the skatepark early in the morning to have the park all to myself. I am a beginner and still learning to skateboard and I am really enjoying it. I try to skate all around the park, pumping in the bowl, practicing top turns on the quarter pipes, and dropping down on the ramps. I would like to get better at skating with speed, kick turning, and carving bottom turn and top turns.
Do you skateboard and know a lot about skateboards? What is your setup and did you customize anything? Please share any friendly comments or tips. I’d love to hear from you.
