Kayak Fishing and No Live Bait? Plan B – use a Scented Lure. It is August 2024, and I caught this striped bass, by trolling a lure: the Daiwa Salt Pro Sinking Minnow. It is a keeper! Here is the fight!

I went kayak fishing early morning on a Saturday in the summer. Conditions were great, light wind, calm seas. There was some haziness in the sky due to the Canadian wildfires, so the sun was red today.

I often spend the first hour of my trips trying to catch live bait with my sabiki rig, then I spent the second hour trolling for striped bass. Unfortunately, the only bait fish I caught was a small cunner which I released. No mackerel or small pollock or pogies today. I usually have my best luck with live bait.

In situations where I don’t catch any live bait, I always have a plan B. Today, my plan B was to use a lure-the Daiwa Salt Pro Sinking Minnow. Otherwise known as the SP minnow. The lure has a lip that forces the lure to sink in the water as you troll it. This helps put the lure in the strike zone while avoiding the seagulls above and the weeds below. Other types of lures I use include the bucktail, tube and worm, or umbrella rigs.

How did I add scent to it? I also bring some plastic bags with frozen parts of old bait fish, such as frozen mackerel or small pollock. I can troll those too. Today, I actually had a bag of frozen mackerel chunks. I threw it in the water to chum and attract the striped bass. Also, I used some of the chum to add scent to my lure. It worked for me! Try it out!

This was a fun fight! You can see the rod bending a lot and the kayak moving with the striped bass sleigh ride. I landed the fish pretty quickly and measured it as 28 inches. To be a keeper, as a recreational angler, the fish has to be between 28 and 31 inches.

I took several angles of the fish with my GoPro. I am using a Yakattack boom stick pro. Which angle do you like the best? From the front, from the side or from the back?

When I returned to shore, I found this guy named Ryan Park. He was freediving and spear fishing and he caught a Tautog! They have large foreheads and big lips and human like teeth. I had never seen or caught on myself, but it is good to know that they are in the area. Check out Ryan’s Instagram: Parkryan123. Thanks for letting me get some footage of the Tog!

My wife is making the striped bass with a ginger lime seasbass recipe. It was delicious. We also cooked the head in a Filipino soup called Sinigang. It was all delicious.
