Lo-Fi Glow from Native Instruments captures the hazy warmth of genres like lo-fi hip hop, lo-fi house, and modern soul. It delivers highly musical sounds brimming with low-fidelity charm. As with all Play series synths, Lo-Fi Glow provides focused controls and macros designed for smooth playability. This allows you to swiftly find sweet spots and make evolving patterns with the built-in sequencer.
While the interface is simple and intuitive, Lo-Fi Glow also includes powerful sound editing tools under the hood. You can tweak sounds deeply via the custom effects chains and macro editing. The randomize feature can quickly take you to unexpected sonic territory when inspiration strikes. Ultimately, Lo-Fi Glow's flexibility and playability enable you to explore sounds in a fun and exciting way.
The effective interface contains blendable dual sound layers and six macros assigned to key parameters for instant sound sculpting. The browser provides quick access to sound sources, while the macros let you radically reshape presets. The Sound view grants access to subtractive synth editing and unique lo-fi shaping tools that define the instrument's distinctive tone. The FX editor lets you customize the effects chain by swapping or reordering effects. Additionally, the built-in analog-style sequencer allows easy creation of intricate melodic and rhythmic patterns. Further configuration is available in the Macros and Settings views.
While some presets may require tweaking depending on your needs, Lo-Fi Glow excels at delivering that melancholic, retro vibe. About half of the factory presets provide fantastic instantly usable sounds. Given the $49 price tag, Lo-Fi Glow represents a great value in the Native Instruments Play series. It captures sought-after lo-fi flavors in one versatile package. Unlike other Play synths, this is one I would readily purchase as a standalone virtual instrument.
