Laptop Repair Fix The Hard Way
This laptop got delivered, and there's a major problem with it. So, I had to see exactly what was wrong with this Dell Alienware 17 R3 gaming laptop. First, it wouldn't turn on, and it turned the light off on the Charger, which is terrible news. This laptop will need a new motherboard, but I went ahead and fixed this the hard way and repaired the motherboard instead.
I removed it and got it under the thermal camera and microscope. I injected .9 volts into the board to find the shorted component and found a shorted capacitor. After replacing it, the short was gone, but it did not charge the battery. I then found a shorted MOSFET that was preventing the battery from charging. So I replaced both of those parts and then the laptop booted up and charged the battery.
