Microsoft Excel Tutorial How To Get The Month Name From Date In Excel

Welcome back to the MrExcel podcast. In this episode, we will be discussing how to extract the month name from a numeric date in Excel. This question was sent in by Nick, who was struggling to find a formula that would give him the month name from a date in his spreadsheet. But fear not, there is a much simpler solution that we will be sharing with you today.

First, let's take a look at the date in question, which is August 25th, 2011. We can see that the month name is already spelled out, but we want to find a way to extract it using a formula. The trick here is to use the TEXT function, which allows us to display a value in a custom number format. By using the format "4 m's" (mmmm), we can convert the numeric date to the month name. So, the formula would be =TEXT(A1,"mmmm"), where A1 is the cell containing the date.

But wait, there's more! The TEXT function also allows us to display the weekday name, using the format "4 d's" (dddd). This means that we can also use this formula to find out what day of the week a certain date falls on. For example, =TEXT(A1,"dddd") would give us "Thursday" for August 25th, 2011. And if you want to see the abbreviated month or weekday name, you can use "3 m's" (mmm) or "3 d's" (ddd) respectively.

But that's not all, there are many other custom date formats that you can use with the TEXT function. For example, using "2 d's" (dd) will add a leading zero to single-digit dates, and using "y" or "yy" will give you the two-digit year. You can also use "yyyy" for the four-digit year. And if you want to see all the available date formats, simply go to Format Cells (Ctrl+1) and select the "Custom" category.

So there you have it, a simple and efficient way to extract the month name or weekday from a numeric date in Excel. We hope you found this tip useful and we'll see you next time for another netcast from MrExcel.
