Justin's Journey: Orthopedic Trauma Survivor
On a day that thousands of people packed downtown Denver to celebrate the Denver Nuggets first NBA world championship, Denver Police Sgt. Justin Dodge nearly lost his life.
On June 15, 2023, Sgt. Dodge was trying to protect the crowd gathered to watch the parade from a fire truck carrying the players, when his leg got caught under the front wheel of the fire truck and run over. He saw his life flash before his eyes as he felt his foot getting crushed, knowing that if it got to his knee, there's a chance he would not make it through.
Sgt. Dodge was rushed to Denver Health, where under the care of its world-renowned orthopedic trauma surgeons, they were able to keep him alive and give him the best care and treatment plan possible for such a severe injury. He ended up needing a below knee amputation and months of rehabilitation to get back to doing what he wanted to do.
Now, Sgt. Dodge is back to work with the Denver Police Department and training full steam with a professional athletic trainer.
"I truly credit the Denver Health staff and the team of surgeons that were working on me with having the insight to think about my long-term future, and trusting in their own skillset that they could try to put me back together as best they could."
