Xena started her journey as a cruel and ruthless warrior guided by Ares, God of War. Before she met Gabrielle hatred and conquest were all Xena knew. And that's how Ares liked her, that's how he wanted her to be. He was the God of War and Xena was his Warrior Queen.
It all changed once Xena met Hercules and turned to the good side, fighting the bad guys instead of being one herself. She went on a journey to redeem herself by helping others.
Once Gabrielle joined Xena, Ares got completely side-lined. Xena saw him for what he was: a manipulative asshole who only cared about himself and his conquests. This wasn't what she wanted. Not anymore.
Though the attraction between the characters never faded away, their relationship changed drastically. Every move Ares made in order to get Xena back only pushed her away even further. He was doing it all wrong...
