Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers will return to the big screen this Halloween 2024, hitting over 600 theatres and drive-ins across more than 400 markets. Halloween Ends and Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988) are both part of the Halloween franchise, but they differ in a number of ways. In Halloween 4, Michael Myers is the primary antagonist and returns to Haddonfield to kill his niece. In Halloween Ends, set 4 years after Halloween Kills, Michael Myers is mostly absent from the film. Halloween Ends received mixed reviews and a relatively disappointing box office, while halloween 4 has remained a fan favorite for 35 years.
Halloween 4 was released nearly a decade after John Carpenter's original in 1988. Despite featuring the worst Michael Myers mask in the series, this 4th entry delivers the goods thanks to its refreshingly old-fashioned plot and solid direction from genre mainstay Dwight H. Little. The result is a splendid ‘80s slasher pic with enough autumnal atmosphere to make you forget it was shot in Utah during the springtime. Best known for introducing 11-year old scream queen Danielle Harris to horror movie fans around the world, Halloween 4 ends on an intriguingly macabre final image that, sadly, wasn’t sufficiently developed in the miserable follow-up.
A complete reinvention of the all-too-familiar Halloween formula, Halloween Ends - the final chapter in David Gordon Green’s reboot trilogy is almost as risky and rule breaking as the Myers-less Halloween 3: Season of the Witch, which enraged a generation of slasher fans. Destined to be every bit as controversial as that misunderstood third installment was at the time of its release, Halloween Ends is refreshingly original, yet contains several standout stalk-and-kill scenes, including a mini massacre set in an automotive scrapyard that cleverly recalls John Carpenter’s Christine. The film takes a huge swing by introducing troubled young Haddonfield Illinois resident Corey Cunningham, a major new franchise character – nicely played by actor Rohan Campbell – and the gamble pays off surprisingly well. Best of all, after unwisely stranding Jamie Lee Curtis in a hospital for the entirety of Halloween Kills, Green and his three co-writers give everyone’s favorite Final Girl a cathartic sendoff worthy of her status as horror movie royalty.
