Two decades before the Blumhouse reboot trilogy began, the Halloween franchise had a legacy sequel thanks to Halloween H20: 20 Years Later, and there are a couple of ways in which it’s better than Halloween 2018. John Carpenter’s Halloween was the beginning of one of the most popular franchises in the horror movie genre, and it's one that has gone through different retcons, making way for different timelines. Halloween’s first retcon happened in 1998 with Halloween H20: 20 Years Later, a direct sequel to Halloween 2 that completely ignored the Jamie Lloyd story arc, the Cult of Thorn, and more.
As the title says, Halloween H20: 20 Years Later reunited the audience with Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) two decades after her first encounter with Michael Myers, and it showed what Laurie had been doing since then. Halloween H20 got mixed reviews during its release, but looking back, it’s one of the strongest sequels before the reboot trilogy arrived. Halloween H20 was the franchise’s first legacy sequel, and it did a couple of things a lot better than David Gordon Green’s Halloween 2018 reboot.
As Jamie Lee Curtis didn’t return as Laurie Strode in Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers, it was explained that Laurie had died in a car accident between Halloween 4 and Halloween 2. This idea was reused in Halloween H20 but with a twist: Laurie faked her death at some point after the events of Halloween II in order to protect herself from Michael Myers if he ever returned, and the only ones who knew about it were Dr. Loomis and Marion Chambers. Laurie relocated to California and changed her name to Keri Tate, got married, had a son played by Josh Hartnett, and got a divorce some time later. Laurie became the headmistress of a private prep school called Hillcrest Academy, and she and John lived on campus with the rest of the students.
Halloween 2018, on the other hand, didn’t let Laurie move on and live her life after that horrible Halloween night in 1978. Laurie was deeply traumatized and never left Haddonfield, and instead, she spent the next four decades preparing for Michael’s return. Laurie’s unresolved trauma led her to make bad decisions, and at one point, Child Protective Services deemed her an unfit parent and she lost custody of her daughter, Karen, who she had been training in the use of firearms so she could defend herself from Michael Myers. Laurie’s life was reduced to waiting for her revenge against Michael, which was unfair to the character.
Halloween Ends saw Laurie finally killing Michael Myers, but after what Halloween Kills established about Michael, it wasn’t the satisfying ending that viewers were expecting (and it left various unanswered questions). Halloween H20 also provided an ending to Laurie and Michael’s story, and it was a lot more satisfying than the one from the reboot trilogy.
