Since 2005, Palestinians in the West Bank have known no other leader than Mahmoud Abbas and he is not well regarded. Widely seen as corrupt, incompetent, and working hand-in-hand with the Israelis.
Observers will tell you he fears losing – and who would he lose to? – most likely Marwan Barghouti who has been in prison for more than 20 years serving multiple life sentences – if Palestinians had a "Nelson Mandela," many believe it would be Barghouti.
Israel says he’s a mastermind terrorist, but supporters say the charges have been fabricated.
