The population of South Asia is rather multifaceted and heavily divided according to religious, caste and political motives. Despite the fact that these corners of the planet are pretty densely populated, people there do not live in peace and very rarely mix with representatives of their own group. Studies of ancient DNA from South Asia show that almost all ethnic groups are the fruits of mixing local hunter-gatherers, Central Asian shepherds and Middle Eastern farmers. It is noteworthy that around the same time exactly the same processes took place in Europe, with the only difference being that the European hunter-gatherers differed from the South Asian ones.
The data of the studies were presented recently at the meeting of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists in Texas and let you know where and when these populations came to South Asia. In addition to this research reinforces the hypothesis that the Pra-Indo-European language, from which a family of many language groups originated, including a group of Slavic languages, originated from the Asian steppes. Previous studies have shown that almost all people living in India have come from a mixture of two major populations from the northern and southern parts of the Indian Subcontinent. Residents of northern India are more connected with residents from Central Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the Caucasus. And the inhabitants of the southern part are associated with ancient groups living in the Indian subcontinent. In the new study, in addition to the genomes of the inhabitants of India, Pakistan and the ethnolinguistic groups of South Asia, restored ancient genomes, from 2 to 3 thousand years old from Iran, Pakistan, South Central Asia, Kazakhstan and Russia also took part. These data made it possible to know when these populations arrived in South Asia and how they interacted.
