In a groundbreaking discovery, the Perseverance rover on Mars has confirmed the presence of ancient lake sediments at the base of the Jezero crater. The findings, detailed in a study led by UCLA and The University of Oslo and published in Science Advances, reveal that the crater once held water, depositing layers of sediments on its floor. Over time, the lake shrank, and sediments carried by a feeding river formed a massive delta. The rover's exploration and radar imaging indicate that these periods of deposition and erosion occurred over eons, confirming the accuracy of geological inferences from satellite images.

David Paige, a UCLA professor and the paper's first author, emphasizes the significance of exploring below the surface to understand the formation of these deposits. Perseverance, equipped with seven scientific instruments, has been studying the 30-mile-wide crater since 2021. The rover's soil and rock samples, collected from the delta, may hold crucial traces of past Martian life. The samples will be brought back to Earth by a future expedition.

Between May and December 2022, Perseverance traversed from the crater floor to the delta, resembling Earth's river deltas, composed of 3 billion-year-old sediments. Using the Radar Imager for Mars' Subsurface Experiment (RIMFAX), the rover fired radar waves to reveal the top surface of the buried crater floor. The resulting images displayed two distinct periods of sediment deposition separated by erosion, providing a detailed subsurface view.

The research team reports that the crater floor beneath the delta is not uniformly flat, suggesting a prior period of erosion. The radar images show regular and horizontal sediments, akin to those found in Earth's lake deposits, confirming the suspected existence of ancient lake sediments. This discovery showcases significant changes in the Martian environment, offering a glimpse into the planet's geological history. The ability of radar to penetrate below the surface has played a crucial role in unraveling Mars' secrets, making this discovery a groundbreaking achievement in planetary exploration.
