Harsh resonances are really hard to smooth out with a regular equalizer. In this video, you'll learn how to fix them with DSEQ3, a Dynamic Equalizer.

Sometimes when mixing, you'll hear some harsh resonances that are really hard to smooth out with a normal equalizer, like these:

I don't know about you, but some frequencies in that acoustic guitar recording are super annoying to me. So distracting, I can't keep mixing the song.

So here's what I did to solve that problem:

To me it sounds a lot smoother now. Here's what I removed from the sound. These are the problematic frequencies, in isolation:

Nasty, right?

By the way, I'm Thales, pop music producer, and that kind of stuff is a pain to fix with a regular equalizer because I'd have to cut some frequencies that are really important to that guitar's timbre.

I couldn't just cut the bad frequencies when they happen, I'd have to cut that range for a longer time than what I need.

So my favourite solution is this dynamic equalizer, DSEQ3 by TBProAudio.

Of all the tools I've tried to this day, it's the most precise, and it costed me less than a hundred dollars.

So, not only a great plugin, but also good pricing.

The link to their website is in the description below, in case you're interested.

This video is not sponsored, by the way. Just my opinion.

So how does this work? It's pretty simple, actually.

On the left side, you have the controls of a normal compressor, except it works in a spectral way, so it treats each frequency more or less independently, according to the value you set up in the selectivity control.

The more selectivity, the more independent each frequency will be treated, which is amazing to target only those very specific harsh resonances.

The slope control determines whether this plugin will focus more on the low frequencies or high frequencies.

You can kind of tilt the emphasis from the left side to the right side of the spectrum.

Attack and release work like any regular compressor, except I believe these numbers are not measured in milliseconds.

Threshold is the same as usual, but it doesn't have a ratio control.

So you gotta use the threshold in combination with this Gain Reduction Strength control.

If you increase it, the plugin will apply more compression to the signal above the threshold. If you decrease it, less compression will be applied, much like a ratio knob on a compressor.

Now, this plugin offers lots of possibilities, but my goal today is not to talk about every feature.

That would require a much longer video. I just want to show you my shortcut to fixing harsh resonances.

But before, can you subscribe to the channel and turn on the notification bell if you're enjoying this video?

Alright, here's my workflow with this plugin to tame those resonances.

First, I listen to the audio in solo to figure out where the harsh resonances are happening in the spectrum.

If you haven't trained your ears yet to recognize frequency ranges, I recommend you try to guess where the issues are happening, then apply a cut and see if it sounds better.

If it doesn't, guess again until you find it. That's a great ear-trainning exercise.
