In this video, Garth Schulte covers the three types of upgrade methods: in-place upgrade, clean installation, and migration. He then covers how to upgrade to Server 2019 using these three methods.

You perform an in-place upgrade when you go from an older operating system to the new operating system on the same piece of hardware. This might be a multistep process depending on the OS you currently have and the OS you want to install. Garth covers the requirements for upgrading to Server 2019 from Server 2008 and 2008 R2, Server 2012 and 2012 R2, and Server 2016.

With a clean install, you’re starting from scratch. With this method, you’re either starting from a clean disk or overwriting an old operating system.

Migrations often start as a clean installation and then you’ll migrate all of the configuration settings, roles, and features from the old server to the new server.
