CBT Nuggets Trainer John McGovern explains how APIs work at a 10,000-foot view as part of his Cisco CCNP Automating and Programming Cisco Service Provider Solutions course: https://training.cbt.gg/12s.
APIs are one of the most essential concepts in modern-day technologies. They are used by smartphones, IoT devices, cars and trucks, and even routers. Therefore, learning what an API is and how to use it is vital to passing the CCNP or becoming an application engineer.
The acronym ‘API’ stands for Application Programming Interface. An API is a black box that ingests requests and returns data. The process of using an API is like ordering food at a restaurant. A typical restaurant experience includes placing an order with a server, and that server transmits your request to the kitchen. When completed, a server brings food from the kitchen to your table.
APIs are carefully designed black boxes built to achieve specific goals. They come in all shapes and sizes, but that doesn’t mean that APIs don’t have standards. Whether managing a rack of Cisco switches or building the next unicorn application, it all starts with understanding how APIs work and how to read them.
