The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has led to millions of illnesses worldwide and resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths. The virus that causes COVID-19 belongs to a family of viruses called coronaviruses, some of which are dangerous and some of which merely cause the common cold. Ayal Gussow, a postdoctoral researcher in the Intramural Research Program at the National Institutes of Health, is scouring the genomes of coronaviruses to identify the unique traits that make some of them so deadly.
