What are War Crimes? | Rome Statute and International Law
War Crimes today are defined by the 1998 Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. Unfortunately, many war crimes are difficult to prosecute, and many criminals continue to be at large. A major question has to with how much international response there should be in trying to stop war crimes from happening.
When thinking about war crimes, be aware that much of the international law around war crimes is recent, and older examples may not have been illegal when they were committed, but can certainly use them as examples for future law.
