World War I had 4 MAIN Causes - M.A.I.N. is also a handy acronym to remember those causes: Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism, and Nationalism. Here, we'll also break down immediate and underlying causes of events. Even though the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by Gavrilo Princip of the Black Hand is often seen as the event that triggered the First World War, other underlying causes created the environment that allowed that spark to set off the war.
