Cholesterol is necessary for the growth and health of cells. Humans, unlike many other mammals, do not have an efficient way to remove cholesterol from the blood. Problems occur when cholesterol accumulates in the blood faster than it can be removed by the liver, allowing cholesterol to deposit in the arteries.
