Nailed the landing 🎯
Look away now if you’re scared of heights. Fortunately, that isn’t the case for these members of the French Navy’s Special Operations Forces as they plummet out of an Atlantique 2 maritime patrol aircraft and down toward the Mediterranean Sea.
Their target landing? The Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier. If they get it wrong, they’ll be out in the cold, dark sea. But of course, they stick the landing.
Special Operations Forces (SOF) regularly train to perform these dizzying feats, which they call High-Altitude, Low-Opening (HALO) jumps. While this is a demanding task requiring precision, landing on a relatively small, moving target requires a staggering amount of skill and coordination between the ship, the aircraft pilot and the commandos.
NATO SOF operators work hard to keep themselves proficient at these highly specialised, dangerous tasks.
