Sleep disturbance is a highly prevalent symptom, causing multiple health and lifestyle issues as well as knock-on impacts for conditions such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. and can be caused by losing a loved one, sometimes if you live next door to noisy neighbors, or young children you’re most likely to be woken up at night.

Professor Michael Polkey, Sleep Medicine and Respiratory Consultant at OneWelbeck Lung Health discusses the causes and symptoms associated with sleep disorders and explains how a lack of sleep or disrupted sleep can impact your health.

The sleep study we offer at OneWelbeck is incredibly convenient and non-invasive, as you’re able to perform the test in the comfort of your home, as well as the ability to walk about at night, unlike other traditional methods. The sleep study will be taken home for one night, where you will put the device on yourself and be measured during the night. A guide will be provided to assist in how to set up and attach the sleep device.

If sleep apnoea is identified from the sleep study, treatment will depend on the severity of the condition. There are a number of treatments available, from lifestyle advice such as losing weight, positional therapy, wearing a dental mouthpiece, or the gold standard treatment for OSA. which is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy.

Sleep hygiene is very important to reduce difficulties associated with sleep. Prof Polkey advises avoiding caffeinated products after midday, allowing your bedroom to be quiet and dark, and limiting the use of mobile phones and tablets before bedtime. If you are struggling with insomnia it’s recommended to not stay in bed but instead, get up and do something calming. Then, once you’ve been out of bed for some time, to get back and attempt to get to sleep.

If you are concerned that you may have a sleep disorder, then get in touch with OneWelbeck Lung Health in which we have a team of sleep specialists who can provide a consultation and set of diagnostic tests appropriate for your sleep symptoms.
