API design is an essential part of API management and the API lifecycle, but but what does it really take to design an API? "API First" is often mentioned, but does it mean what you think it means? Let's talk about the language of API design!
In this first part, David Biesack (Chief API Officer at Apiture) introduces us to what it really means to design APIs. After an introduction into the topic, we talk about what "API First" really is and then talk about the importance of creating a domain model before you start designing the API itself.
This video is based on David Biesack's "The Language of API Design" series of articles on his "API Design Matters" Substack. For a deeper dive into the topics, here are links to the Substack and the individual articles:

For this first part the most important take-away is that building a domain model should come prior to even starting with API design. A method such as #DomainDrivenDesign (as advocated by @VaughnVernon and others) can help a lot to approach the domain modelling process in a structured and disciplined way.
Stay tuned for the second video where we will talk about how to take the domain model and turn it into yet another language such as an API description in OpenAPI.
