Platform engineering is a hot topic these days and in some shape or form we're all doing it (we'll explain in the video...). What are the benefits you can get from it and how can you figure out where you stand and where you might want to be? Enter @cncf's Platform Engineering Maturity Model!
@SyntassoAbby of @syntasso explains why platform engineering matters and how the maturity model can help everybody to orient themselves, to set targets, and to then plan how to improve their platform practices.
The platform engineering maturity model looks at five platform aspects:
• Investment: How are staff and funds allocated to platform capabilities?
• Adoption: Why and how do users discover and use internal platforms and platform capabilities?
• Interfaces: How do users interact with and consume platform capabilities?
• Operations: How are platforms and their capabilities planned, prioritized, developed and maintained?
• Measurement: What is the process for gathering and incorporating feedback and learning?
For each of these aspects, there are four levels of maturity that organizations can be at:
• Level 1, Provisional — Voluntary or temporary
• Level 2, Operationalized — Dedicated team
• Level 3, Scalable — As product
• Level 4, Optimizing — Enabled ecosystem
It's important to keep in mind that the goal isn't for all organizations to be at the highest level. That can be quite expensive and not make a lot of sense depending on the goals of an organization. But the maturity model provides a way to figure out where organizations are and where they may want to be. If there's a difference between these two, then investing into platform practices probably is a good idea.
