It is often incorrectly cited that private property did not exist in the Soviet Union. This sort of ultra-Marxist position does not take into account the incredible nuance from the perspective of Soviet leaders. Such leaders such as Vladimir Lenin, who idolized the war-time economy of Imperial Germany, as it kept market forces whilst retaining state ownership in major industries. Then you had others like Bukharin who simply thought that money would dissipate. Finally, you had the more libertarian faction within the Communist Party, headed by the likes of Alexandra Kollontai (the Workers' Opposition), which complained about the centralization of power but didn't do much to prevent it. These figures also had to deal with external actors like that of the Tambov and Kronstadt rebellions.
This video covers legislation, war communism, as well as the reasoning behind the New Economic Policy. Additional focus is also given to the framework of the 1918 Russian Constitution, as well as to the Workers' Opposition. I hope such matters can be put to rest, as I will continue this series with a second party, discussing Stalinism. Yes, even under Stalin, the Soviet Union still effectively had private property; it simply osculated in regards to its widespread use.
