WHAT KIND OF SOCIAL WORKER DO YOU WANT TO BE?
This is not a typical careers in Social Worker kind of video. This video is to help us to begin thinking more critically about what we have been taught in our Social Work education and whether or not that information has positioned us to solve problems facing the community in this difficult time.
It helps us analyze..Are we working toward the right cause? Are we advocating for tangibles over symbolism? Are we demanding policies that maintain the status quo or ones that creates equity?
We were all raised under a particular political and cultural framework but for many of us, at least for me... it did not include a context for our struggle or how best to advocate for systemic change. Throughout my journey as a Social Worker I have had the opportunity to work with the NAACP, the Urban League and others and although I learned very important aspects of mobilizing and organizing, there was not much education around liberation and de-centering whiteness.
As I continue this journey, the orientation I have of centering myself culturally, helps me to minimize anti-black sentiments and to recognize colonized ways of thinking and being. That level of work is critical if we are to heal ourselves, our families and to rebuild our communities.
