Miner’s Lettuce (Claytonia perfoliata) is also known as Winter Purslane or Indian lettuce. It is native to western North America and commonly grown in home gardens. A nutrient-dense, cold-hardy annual can be grown in zones five and below. The succulent leaves and stems are tasty and reminiscent of spinach and lettuce. The flowers and stems are also edible.
Claytonia is considered a wild green and a self-sowing plant, and seeds are dispersed easily due to its dehiscent fruits (mature seed pods/capsules that split or burst open). They’re easily removed as they’re shallow-rooted. We grow it in raised beds and in-ground; occasionally, we get volunteer plants in random containers.
It performs well in full sun and partial shade (in warm climates). Claytonia will thrive in most soil conditions—poor, acidic, neutral, or alkaline—but it must be well-draining, moist, or dry soil. We don’t water our patches; they do just fine even with low water.
Planting time: Sow seeds 4-6 weeks before your last spring frost and again from August through early fall in wide rows or blocks (square-foot gardening). Seeds will germinate in soil temperatures of 50-55 degrees F. We allow a few to self-sow in the summer.
