After applying for OPT, you cannot work until you get your EAD card and the "valid from" date has passed. USCIS will mail you a Form I-797, Notice of Action, after receiving your OPT EAD application. TechFetch H1B provides information on I-797 form status to help you understand the process better.
Form I-797 confirms that USCIS received your OPT EAD application. The Notification Date is when the USCIS mailed this letter, while the "Received Date" is when USCIS acknowledged receipt of your application. The USCIS online case status tool will reflect "Case Received" when you receive your I-797C after a decision, such as approval, rejection, or Evidence Request.
If your OPT EAD application is approved, you will see "Case Approved" online, and you will receive Form I-797 a few days later. After your OPT is granted, your case status will be "New Card Produced." After getting a status update of “Case Approved”, USCIS would send your OPT EAD card, and your case status would change to “Card mailed to me”. Once delivered, the status of your case will be "Card Delivered at Post Office". You must also disclose your employment to DHS through the SEVP Portal after you receive your EAD card.
