A pair of High Court judges in Britain granted Julian Assange permission to appeal his extradition to the United States, where he faces charges of espionage for releasing reams of sensitive military and diplomatic files via WikiLeaks back in 201o.

It was a legal victory for Assange, as it means that the 52-year-old journalist and WikiLeaks founder will not be whisked away by U.S. Marshals but will be allowed a full appeal against the extradition order. Assange will remain in the high-security Belmarsh prison on the outskirts of London.

The judges granted Assange and his lawyers leave to appeal on a fairly narrow but important question: Will a U.S. court allow him to defend himself on First Amendment, free speech grounds? And will he have access to a full defense, even though he is not a U.S. citizen. Assange is from Australia.
