Dexedrine (Dextroamphetamine) is a stimulant medication used to treat ADHD. Our practice in Philadelphia often prefers trialing other medications first, as this medication can lead to abuse, dependence, tolerance and withdrawal, and individuals should thoroughly discuss all risks and benefits with their providers, before starting, stopping or changing doses of this medication. It works by increasing the transmission and availability of norepinephrine and dopamine (similar to adderall [amphetamine salts], Ritalin [methylphenidate] and Focalin [dexmethylphenidate]).

Dexedrine can be effective in treating ADHD and narcolepsy. It is typically prescribed from 5 to 40 mg throughout the day (divided into individual smaller doses) for ADHD or even up to 60 mg per day (also divided throughout the day) in narcolepsy.

In addition to the risks of abuse, dependence, tolerance and withdrawal, it can cause tachycardia (rapid heart rate), increased blood pressure, increased anxiety and other side effects (some of them serious). For example, stimulant psychosis can be seen, particularly in individuals taking high doses, or in those who abuse the medication.
