Simple Definition of an Atom:
Atoms are the fundamental building-blocks of chemistry.

Textbook Definition of an Atom:
An atom is a fundamental constituent of matter at the chemical level, consisting of a dense nucleus surrounded by a cloud of electrons. The nucleus, which contains the majority of the atom's mass, is composed of positively charged protons and electrically neutral neutrons. The electrons, which are negatively charged, orbit the nucleus at various energy levels, or shells, due to electrostatic forces of attraction between the opposite charges of the electrons and the nucleus. This arrangement not only dictates the atom's chemical properties through interactions via electron exchange or sharing with other atoms but also adheres to principles of quantum mechanics that describe the probabilistic nature of these subatomic particles' locations and motions.
