Tried playing a set starting with a completely blank project. Ran into a few hiccups here and there, but overall pretty happy with the results. Let me know what you think in the comments!
Of course, it's completely unnecessary to start with a blank project every time. But this process does give me a new appreciation for templates, and working against the clock helps me keep in mind what pieces are most important.
REFLECTIONS
Biggest obstacle was probably still folder management...I could probably improve transitions just by making loop folders more navigable
I didn't sample quite as much as I have in the past. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I think sampling can provide a really powerful way to develop ideas gradually (rather than subbing them out, which was the main tool for this set).
FaderFox was having some connectivity issues...might just be a faulty cable.
I rarely if ever took the beat completely out. This can be a useful tool to clear the slate and move in a new direction...even change tempo.
These improvised sets tend to flow in cycles...moments of uncertainty building into moments of discovery and "arrival." The trick is to make the transition sections feel like they have a trajectory and momentum...to minimize false starts (sounds that don't end up getting used). Like improv, the best way to do this is to adopt a "yes-and" attitude to anything new.
My passive mind wants to "correct" certain sounds when they don't align with my expectations...these sets are an opportunity to practice thinking differently.
This process also inspired me to revisit some of my favorite tracks, and study their arrangement. I want to practice performing those arrangements live...hopefully over time they can become muscle memory and make their way into longer set structure.
