Undisciplining II conference plenary session with Dr Kirsteen Paton, Dr Emma Jackson, Dr Abigail O'Connor.
Conference programme description:
A discussion focusing on Kirsteen Paton’s new book Class and Everyday Life (Routledge, 2024), which presents a sociology of class from the bottom up, focusing on the point at which class is made and remade. The book draws on an understanding of everyday classed experiences that identifies and challenges inequalities while also recognising value and hope. This perspective acknowledges both the opportunities and challenges of class as a way of developing a stronger, more politicised understanding by taking solidarity and class community power seriously in resisting inequality and developing emancipatory politics. The discussion will be followed by an opportunity for questions from the audience.
Dr Kirsteen Paton is Senior Lecturer in the Sociology of Class, University of Glasgow
Dr Emma Jackson is Reader in Sociology and the Director of the Centre for Urban and Community Research (CUCR) at Goldsmiths, University of London
Dr Abigail O'Connor is a researcher at the New Economics Foundation, and recently completed her PhD in sociology and social policy at the University of Liverpool.
