This is the first module of my revisited lecture on "Research vs innovation," in the series "Innovation for scientists." This series of videos is called now "Research [or/for] innovation."
In this Module I "Why we are wrong about innovation," I describe the source of the most significant mistakes that researchers from the Academic world usually do when they are willing to develop innovation.
This critical mistake results from what we believe (or were told) about the logical path from research to innovation.
Using one of my personal experience as a material chemist, I show how a significant domain of research in porous materials (mesoporous silica) led to a complete dead-end in terms of applications, after 20 years of research worldwide, millions of $ spent, and despite all the claims we made.
If starting with academic research is not a criterion for success in innovation, starting from a business point of view cannot be successful either. From my personal experience (my first startup company) I show the 8 logical steps that we are supposed to follow, which will result in most of the time in a complete failure.
These descriptions of - personal - failures allow us to finally point out what is the most critical thing we forget, which was demonstrated to be the primary cause for startup failures.
