Welcome to Ephemeris, an RTS and 4X hybrid much like Total War, just within a space setting with many of the same features, and some unique ones too, made real by one indie developer. The idea of Ephemeris is that you start the game on the turn-based strategy layer and expand through space combat in real time battles with fleets of warships made up of units you can control as groups and set formations like in Homeworld.

The map itself is randomly populated by planets of different types from cozy terran ones to barren balls of iron and this directly impacts available resources on them. Another layer of randomness is the tech tree, which is changed up every time, except to make sure that tech necessary for space exploration is accessible at the start of it. These two elements combined will make sure no two playthroughs are ever the same in Ephemeris.

The planets here are your production hubs and on them you construct both buildings and your spaceships using your workforce/population. The buildings are improvements of sorts and you need them to increase food production, materials, credits and research points. And interestingly enough like in Total War you upgrade building levels as you research more advanced ones.

There are a number of features that make Ephemeris stand out. First, and my personal favorite is the fully 3D real-time space combat with simulated physics. This means ships don’t fly like airplanes in space, but much like in the Expanse novel and TV show, have to flip and do a braking burn every time they want to slow down or stop. They also have many thrusters providing them with the ability to move in all three axes, often at the same time.

The second amazing feature of Ephemeris is the ability for players to design their own ships. Not only are these ships different in size going from a tiny scout to absolutely massive heavy battleships and cargo ships but they differ in the kinds of weapons systems they support on their hull types. Besides weapons, you choose the power core type, special items, drives which can be distinguished by their differently colored exhaust plumes, type of shields and armor.

When it comes to weapons in particular, there is an added level of variety because mounts on these ships can be fixed, set on a gimbal or a turret. The last two give you much better firing arcs but cost more according to their increased utility.

The third and very cinematic extra feature of this future indie gem is the ability to turn on the action camera mode when selecting a ship and go a step further and take manual control over its flight and fight systems. You can use its main engine, thrusters, move in all three axes and fire your weapon systems. This is also the point where this game becomes a cross between not just Total War, Homeworld and Stellaris, but also FreeSpace.

The fourth interesting feature is how you manage your overall empire in Ephemeris. There is a slider at the top of the screen which is divided up into four sections. Production for buildings, a separate production for ships, one for research and one for credits. You can move these sliders left and right to choose the best configuration of the economy that will help you achieve your current goals. If you are on an improvement bender you slide it over so building construction gets all the funding, and shipyards get no minerals. Or if you want to construct that massive heavy battleship you send all the minerals to shipbuilding. You can also force more funding into research and speed it up.
