How good is the 100-400 G master in 2024 for video? Let's take it to the Zoo!
Today we visit the Singapore Zoo and bird paradise! Armed with a 100-400mm G master courtesy of a loan from Sony, we rig out the FX6 and bring it on a walk. Everything was shot in 8-bit XAVC-L, OSS on and handheld. All the shots were shot as wide open as the lens could do, from F4.5 - F5.6.
Overall, I felt that this lens was a great lens for the Sony native system in the 100-400mm range (as another lens does not exist). Even though it was one of the earlier G master models, it still holds up well when I tested it with my A7RV for photos, albeit at a slight loss of resolution when compared with the GM v2 models such as the 70-200mm GM ii. If you're in the market for a native 100-400mm lens in the Sony system, you still would not go wrong with this model, as the asking price in the used market is quite competitive. Remember, native lenses always perform better than 3rd party lenses, such as for AF and tracking, but it comes at the cost of being more expensive than the 3rd party offerings.
My likes: Decent weight and size, great Sony build quality, good focus speed and MF feel, OSS is not too intrusive and quite organic looking (for video work)
My dislikes: Zoom ring is way too stiff and twists the lens mount a bit too much for my comfort level, not as sharp for photography compared to the more recent GM v2 lenses, OSS may not be strong enough for 2024 standards, and slightly busy bokeh at some subject distances.
I think this is still a great lens for video work and offers the flexibility of a 100-400mm zoom for photography. Watch the footage for yourself and decide!
